Steven Wessels, the new Manager/Director of the Mason County Road Commission.

As of Monday, Steven Wessels has officially taken over for Mary Samuels as the Manager/Director of the Mason County Road Commission.

Wessels previously worked with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for 26 years where he accomplished a variety of roles, which he provided some insight to.

For 18 years Wessels worked as a maintenance operator and crew leader, which included responsibilities such as plowing, road projects, maintenance, overseeing different projects, and other tasks similar to those done at the MCRC.

After that Wessels became the Garage Supervisor for both Hastings and Grand Rapids for eight years, where his primary roles were to keep track of day-to-day happenings, maintain the garages, and oversee budgets.

Wessels said his recent position with MDOT made him no stranger to Mason County as he has worked in the area numerous times and is already familiar with the MCRC staff and the county as a whole.

Currently Wessels does not have plans of making any major changes as he is in the process of learning the county’s way of handling different managerial procedures.

“Right now my focus is on absorbing all the knowledge I can from Mary,” he said.

Wessels’ goal as the Manager/Director of MCRC is to get involved in the community. He aims to bring light to what the MCRC does and share more of that information with the community, Wessels said.

Samuels will retire at the end of the month.
